Fitting Guide: Get the Perfect Fit

Correctly fitting any Harness is extremely important.  While each make and model will have specific fit characteristics and instructions, there are several areas to note when fitting any harness.

Always open all of the harness’s clips that you can.  This may seem obvious but many well-designed harnesses open so it does not have to be put over the dog’s head.   When you are working with an “easy going” dog, especially one you know well, it is tempting to keep the head piece attached so that you just slide it over the dog’s head, instead of undoing it and snapping it around the neck.  While this may be totally fine, some dogs will eventually become head shy from sliding the harness over their head and ears.

Any harness should lay flat against the dog’s body.  If you are using a harness that has a connector strap between the front legs you will want to check that this strap is flush against the sternum but not so short that it is pulling the barrel strap into the elbows.

To ensure your Harmony Harness works as intended, it’s essential to fit it properly. Here’s how:

1. Harness Placement

The chest strap should sit low across the chest bone (not across the throat).

The back strap lies between the shoulder blades.

Ensure there’s enough room to fit two fingers between the harness and your dog.

2. Measure Your Dog

Girth (chest): Measure around the widest part of your dog’s ribcage.

Neck: Where a collar would normally rest.

Match your dog’s measurements with our sizing chart (include table or link here).

3. Adjusting the Fit

Start with the front and belly straps snug, then adjust the top and chest.

Ensure there’s no rubbing behind the legs.

Your dog should be able to move freely and comfortably.

4. Checking the Fit

When checking for fit, be sure and notice how tight or loose it is when your dog is standing, sitting, and lying down.  Your dog’s movement should not be inhibited at all, and it is worth paying special attention to how the harness fits in relation to your dog’s shoulders and elbows.

Freedom of movement through the neck and shoulders can help release tension in the back, improve core strength and enable the dog to engage his hindquarters.  Avoiding restriction through the neck and shoulders can help to reduce lead frustration and enables the dog to sniff and explore his environment when out and about.

Do not leave a harness on a dog unattended!

After removing a harness, it is a good idea to reattach all of the clips so it does not become tangled in storage.

How to Use the Harmony Leash & Handle System

1. Double Connection

Attach one clip to the front ring on the chest.

Attach the other clip to the back ring on the shoulders.

This dual-point contact helps guide your dog with subtle, balanced movements.

2. Add the Sliding Harmony Handle

The  handle connects both leash points without a fixed point of contact, helping to re-balance your dog’s movement and giving you a light, connected feel in your hand.

3. Walking Tips

Use gentle, rhythmic movements to guide direction and pace.

Avoid pulling—allow the harness to cue changes through light contact.

Move your feet when you want to redirect your dog rather than just pulling with your arms

4. Helpful Techniques

Pause and Breathe: If your dog pulls or gets excited, stop, breathe, and wait for calm.

Change Direction: Gently guide with the front point to shift focus or reduce pulling.

Use Your Core: Let your body movement and breath lead the walk not your arms.
